What Challenges Does the Gig Economy Face? – Bits & Bytes

Published

on

The gig economy is changing the way people work. Companies are hiring contract workers to perform tasks instead of relying on traditional workers to whom they pay monthly wages or salaries.

Workers are able to work for many companies in temporary positions, do ongoing work or quick gigs. The growth of the gig workforce has largely been driven by advances in technology and difficulty in finding traditional jobs.

This category of work is still undefined by policies and this obviously poses some challenges. Many workforce policies were formulated with a different workforce in mind. The gig economy has great potential and implications for society but governments around the world need to work on framing policies that help to resolve some of the following issues.

Minimum wages

The minimum wage is an issue covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act. This act regulates various other issues, too, such as overtime pay and the number of weekly work hours. Compliance with the act includes displaying labor law posters and Resourceful Compliance helps companies to stay up to date and remain compliant with the laws.

Current legislation does not apply to the portion of the labor market exempted from the minimum wage, like the gig economy. When there’s no policy that regulates a minimum wage, this can lead to exploitation and economic insecurity. A basic employment right of all individuals is the right to a minimum wage.

Worker classification

The U.S. Department of Labor has not regarded gig workers as employees since 2019. This means that some companies in the gig economy are exempt from the legal responsibilities that apply to other employees.

Across the European Union, a series of court cases have tried to clarify responsibilities of gig economy companies and whether people who work for them are self-employed or employees. Many of these cases have been settled in favor of workers, like the French court that defined the relationship between Uber and its drivers as a “work contract.”

There is evidence that many workers in the gig economy value their self-employed status, not the least because of reduced contributions. Many young people work in the gig economy and perceive the risks of being sick or unemployed as too remote to make sacrifices to a current paycheck.

Any apprehension about pro-worker legislation for the gig economy is probably due to uncertainty. Would an “employee” classification of gig workers actually be appropriate or would it negatively affect the business of digital platforms?

Many gig economy companies don’t want to label the professionals that make a living off their platforms “employees” because they believe they want freedom and flexibility. However, this should not mean that they can implement one-sided policies that negatively affect employees.

Health insurance and social security benefits

As this workforce is freelance and contract-based, many gig workers do not receive benefits like health insurance and must acquire them on their own. A second risk is that the gig economy has not really been tested by an economic downturn as it is still in its infancy.

A turn in the economic cycle could mean fewer people will be working as employers are able to immediately stop hiring. Economic insecurity and a lack of social security benefits could leave many individuals in a difficult position.

Meaningful solutions will be found to address some of the biggest challenges of the gig economy. Any injustices are unlikely to disappear overnight but governments are busy working on policies as the gig economy keeps expanding. It’s important for them to work on the challenges and start dealing with them as the gig economy is here to stay.

A POP princess tribute festival is coming near to Clydebank next month.

Princess of Pop Little Mix Magic and Simply Ariana will be putting on an outdoor concert suitable for children and young adults at the Well Fed Cafe in Whiteinch on Sunday, July 4.

Nicola Duffy, organiser of the event, told the Post how she was inspired to start an tribute band company after university.

She said: “I had done a Girls Aloud tribute years ago and I knew I wanted to manage my own tribute band. I have always ran my own dance school too which fuelled the desire to start something like this.

“In 2016 I started a Little Mix tribute and then the following year a girl approached me to do a Ariana tribute which was great.

“I love working with girls and giving them empowerment and there really isn’t many companies that do modern music.”

Nicola was able to put a gig on last September before lockdown restrictions were tightened but is keen to get out touring again to give kids across the west of Scotland something to look forward too.

The 33-year-old added: “I just thought I would put on some shows because the kids have missed out on so much.

“Hopefully it is something they can look forward too especially since two members of Little Mix are pregnant. We pride ourselves on being child-friendly and love interacting with the audience.

“The show will be amazing because the venue is spaced out so people can enjoy the music in their own household bubble with hand sanitiser at every table.

“The girls can also get glitter tattoos and glitter in their hair so it feels like they are going to a proper concert. We just hope we have some good weather for when the day arrives!”

The show will run from 12pm-3pm and tickets are £12 each with an opportunity for socially distanced meet and greets with the acts.

There will also be an opportunity to get autographs.
