Gig goers to wait months for refunds as tickets for doomed events keep selling

“If the ticket company or venue were to become insolvent in the meantime, there’s a risk that customers could lose the money they’ve paid.”

Ticketing firms Live Nation and Ticketmaster said announcements about the shows in June were “imminent” but declined to comment further.

Jonathan Brown of the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers said it was the responsibility of promoters, not ticket sellers, to reschedule or cancel events.

He said: “It is not in our members’ interests to upset ticket buyers, so they are always keen to get clarity on the likelihood of events taking place. However, rescheduling international tours, especially within the current constraints, is a complicated process and takes time. Thankfully this issue affects only a tiny number of events, which are not being actively marketed.”

Meanwhile, there has been an explosion in complaints to ticket companies over refunds in the past 12 months. The overall number of complaints to ticket firms was similar to the previous year’s, according to Resolver, a complaints aggregator, even though very few events were taking place.

However, of the 3,000 complaints received, almost all were about refunds and the failure to deliver them in accordance with the conditions of sale.

Resolver’s Martyn James said: “The percentage of complaints about  refunds is significantly up on the previous year. This is a huge issue  and, as more and more events are  rescheduled  to next year, this is going to be a problem for a long time.”

Customers are entitled to a refund if the organiser cancels, moves or reschedules an event, as long as they  bought the ticket from an official  seller, according to Citizens Advice.

These refunds are usually issued automatically. Customers are less likely to get their money back if they bought a ticket from a reselling or secondary ticketing website.

Mr James added: “I continue to receive floods of calls and emails from people waiting for refunds that haven’t  come, despite assurances that they would.”
